Fine lines and wrinkles are far from a seasonal problem but many people find that they are even more prevalent during the winter months. We know the weather can have a significant impact on our skin, so it only makes sense that, as the temperatures plummet, we might notice a change in the texture and appearance of our skin. Understanding why your fine lines may be more noticeable in the winter is the first step to correcting the issues.
Less Humidity Means More Wrinkles
During the winter, the climate is less humid than it would be during the spring or summer. Although it might be nicer to spend time outdoors this way, the lack of moisture in the air often translates to a lack of moisture in your skin. This means that you need to ramp up your normal moisturizing routine by applying a layer of lotion not only in the morning and night but throughout the day as well, especially if you are just coming in from out of doors.
Use the Right Moisturizer
If you’ve noticed more wrinkles during the winter even though you moisturize, the problem may not be with your routine. It may be that you are just not using the right moisturizer for the weather. Although a lightweight lotion may work well during warmer months, you should switch to a thicker, heavier cream to hydrate your skin during the winter. It will stay on longer and prevent your skin from other dehydrating factors, such as harsh winter winds.
Don’t Forget Sunscreen
You know that sun damage is one of the leading causes of premature wrinkles yet, if you are like most people, you are still not doing enough to protect your skin from ultraviolet rays. Once we are done with the beach for the year, many of us think that we are off the hook for sunscreen until the next summer. In truth, the sun is just as powerful during the winter as it is during the summer and your skin is still as just as much of a risk. You should still be applying a minimum of SPF 30 every day. Remember that UV rays can reach your skin through window panes, so you are at risk even if you are not sitting outside.
Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process but that doesn’t mean you have to let them take over your face during the winter. Hydrating properly and using better skin care products, such as those from Genovo Skincare, will help get both you and your skin safely through the harsh winter months.
