Cosmeceuticals are one of the fastest-growing segments in the beauty industry as it aims to enhance beauty with additional benefits. Cosmeceuticals are cosmetics with pharmaceutical properties. They are a class of skin care product that contains biologically active ingredients capable of exerting physiologic changes to the skin. What does that mean? Cosmeceuticals skin care products don’t just make skin look better temporarily; they have long-term benefits, which is why they are so popular as anti-aging products. Cosmeceutical skin care products contain active ingredients like vitamins, antioxidants, and botanical extracts. These ingredients help make noticeable changes to the skin.
The Need for Cosmeceutical Skin Care
Environmental elements, air pollution, environmental elements, sun damage, and the normal aging process affects the cell membranes and collagen of the skin. Cosmeceuticals combine both cosmetic and medical benefits to heal it.
- Cosmeceuticals Penetrate the Skin
Cosmeceuticals products contain ingredients with smaller molecular structures and better penetrator enhancers. That means the active ingredients can get deep into the skin and interact with the living cells and affect the way they function. They penetrate through the epidermis to the dermis where your collagen, elastin, and new skin cells reside. Most over-the-counter skin care products or drug store skin care products contain ingredients with big molecular structures and as a result, they are not able to penetrate the skin. They simply rest on the surface of the skin. Even when they can get through, they only penetrate the top layers of the skin, which are made of dead cells.
- Cosmeceuticals Contain More Active Ingredients
Drug store skin care products or department store skincare products can range in price from cheap to very expensive. These types of products do not contain many active ingredients and often contain inactive compounds. If OTC skin care products do contain active ingredients, they most likely do not have the same amount that cosmeceutical skin care products have. OTC skin care products may say they have active ingredients like peptides, vitamin C, retinol and/or antioxidants in them, but the concentration is so small it’s not going to produce visible results that can truly transform the skin over time.
