If you have ever experienced skin inflammation from sun damage, you have likely also watched your skin begin to peel and fall away. This can be, at best, embarrassing and, at worst, extremely painful, depending on the degree of your sun burn. If you act fast once you realize that your skin has burned in the sun, you should be able to avoid peeling or, at least, keep the peeling from getting worse.
Soothe Skin Inflammation Immediately
As soon as you notice skin inflammation from sunburn, start taking steps to soothe it. An aloe vera gel or cortisone lotion will work perfectly and you likely already have one of those in your medicine cabinet. In a pinch, you can crush up some aspirin and mix it with water to make a paste that can be applied directly to the skin inflammation. Acting immediately will go a long way to ease some of the discomfort that you are likely to be experiencing.
Take a Cool Bath
In the day or so following a sun burn, it is best to avoid taking a shower. When you have skin inflammation from the sun, it is likely that you have some blisters as well and a hot shower could burst them, causing further irritation. Instead, soak your sore skin in a cool bath that is free of any oils or soaps. Adding these things to your bath water will dry out your skin, making it more inclined to peel away.
Keep Yourself Hydrated
In order to keep your skin from peeling, it is important to keep it hydrated. However, applying moisturizers can be uncomfortable when you are dealing with a fresh burn. In this case, it is especially important to hydrate you skin from the inside out. Drinking a minimum of eight glasses of water each day is one of the best ways to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. Once your skin is no longer sensitive to the touch, you can start using a gentle moisturizer to keep it from peeling.
When you are spending time in the sun, it is essential to use proper sun protection so that you can avoid sun burn all together. However, in the event that you do forget the sunscreen, be prepared to treat your burned skin and protect it from peeling. Anti-inflammatory creams and cool hydration are the best way to keep your skin healthy and safe.
