People who have oily skin generally feel that they have been dealt the worst possible hand when it comes to types of complexion. Although an oily complexion can lead to some issues if it isn’t managed properly, it is not actually an altogether bad thing. In fact, there are actually a few benefits to having skin that produces more oil than normal, as long as you are taking steps to keep it from getting out of control.
Understanding Oily Skin
What we generally call oil on our faces is actually a substance called sebum. It is produced by the sebaceous glands, which are found right below the surface of the face. We may not like how it looks when we produce too much sebum but we all need it, at least to some degree, to protect our faces. Its main function is to lubricate the skin and to keep it waterproof. That means the more sebum you produce, the better protected you are from the elements.
Sebum and Sunscreen
Another benefit to having an increased production of sebum is that it helps boost the impact of any sun protection products you use. It is important to understand having overactive sebaceous glands does not mean you can forego sunscreen. However, you can take comfort in knowing that your SPF products may be working a little bit harder for you than your friends who have dry or normal types of complexions. Keep in mind that, because of the extra sebum on your face, you may want to use a lighter weight sunscreen, but not a lower SPF.
Oily Complexions and Aging
You may not like the way sebum looks on the surface of your face now but you may be grateful for it as you get older. When your face produces more oil, it is less likely to become inflamed, whether as a result of allergies or environmental factors. Inflammation is what eventually leads to fine lines and wrinkles so, if you are experiencing less inflammation when you are younger, you will likely see fewer fine lines and wrinkles as you begin to age.
Having oily skin can be bothersome but there are actually a few benefits to this type of complexion.
