The change of seasons can be extremely stressful for your skin because you simply don’t know what you will be up against from day to day. In September and October, it is not unusual to have 80-degree, sunny weather one day and temperatures in the fifties with wind on the next day. When you have a dermatological routine that changes with the seasons, this can be confusing. However, there are a few ways you can protect yourself during these transitional months.
Wear the Right Clothes for Comfortable Skin
When the weather is changing, you are likely to layer up your clothes so that you are prepared for any situation. When you plan your outfits at this time of year, try to stick to soft, breathable fabrics that will let your skin adjust to the current temperature. Wearing thick, synthetic fabrics can cause you to become itchy, irritated, and overheated as the temperatures climb and then drop again. Allowing yourself to naturally accommodate the weather will make you much more comfortable as the day progresses.
Never Skip the Sunscreen
No matter what the temperature is outside, one thing remains true. You need to apply sunscreen to all of your exposed skin every single day. The ultraviolet rays from the sun are just as powerful on a cool day as they are on a warm day and you are putting yourself at great risk if you decide to skip it when the temperatures drop. Consider using a moisturizer that has SPF included in its ingredients so that you do not have to remember an extra step in your routine. Failure to do so could result in fine lines, wrinkles and dark marks, among other complications.
Avoid Hot Baths and Showers
Hot baths and showers are notoriously bad for your skin because they suck out all of your body’s natural moisture. When you are trying to adjust to constant changes in the temperature, it is important to keep your skin as hydrated as you possibly can. This means using face and body moisturizers several times a day as well as avoiding external stressors that will lead to dryness. During these transitional months, stick to lukewarm water and pat try to avoid irritation.
