If you are suffering with intense skin inflammation, there is a good chance that what you have is actually a condition known as hives. These itchy, painful welts can occur for a number of reasons, including skin irritations and, more commonly, allergic reactions. While hives will usually clear up on their own within a day or two, they can be very uncomfortable. Luckily, there are a few simple things you can do to make the time more bearable.
Heat Aggravates Skin Inflammation
If you are unfortunate enough to break out in hives during the summer, you know the hot weather will only intensify the skin inflammation, making it itchier and more uncomfortable. While you are waiting for your hives to clear up, consider holding a cold compress to the sores in order to relieve some of the itch. You may also consider turning up the air conditioning in your house or sitting in front of a fan to keep the surface of your skin as cool as possible. During the day or two following an outbreak of hives, it is also a good idea to avoid exposure to the sun.
Relief in Your Skin Care Products
There are many natural ingredients found in a number of skin care products that are very soothing to the skin during an outbreak of hives and you likely already have some of them at home. For example, the same aloe vera that you may use to soothe sunburn can also help reduce the skin inflammation caused by hives. Witch hazel is also found in many medicine cabinets and can be very soothing for irritated and inflamed skin.
When the Itching Persists
If your skin is still inflamed and itchy after three or more days or if the hives begin to get worse instead of better, it may be time to go see the doctor. They will be able to help you better understand what caused the hives in the first place and recommend a course of action to get you back into shape. There are several over the counter medications that can help soothe hives. If your outbreak is severe enough, they may even recommend a prescription strength solution.
Hives can be incredibly painful, but the good news is that they generally do not last for long. Using cool compresses as well as soothing ingredients found in your medicine cabinet can go a long way to ease the discomfort.
