People are often surprised to experience skin inflammation as a result of sunscreen because they know that they applied sun protection to their skin. What they fail to realize is that they are not using the correct product or are not applying their sunscreen correctly. Learning what kind of sunscreen to use and how to use it is the only way to protect yourself against sun induced skin inflammation at all times of the year.
Apply Regularly to Avoid Skin Inflammation
A common mistake many people make with sunscreen is only applying it once a day. It is a common misconception that you only need to reapply your sunscreen if you go swimming. However, after hours outside, you will likely sweat away your sunscreen or it will absorb into your skin and no longer be effective. The result will be unexpected burning and skin inflammation that could have been avoided by simply reapplying. No matter what your outdoor activities are, you should reapply a full ounce of sunscreen every two hours.
Choose a Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen
If you are not choosing a sunscreen that specifically says it is Broad Spectrum, then you are only protecting yourself from half of the sun’s dangerous rays. A Broad-Spectrum sunscreen will protect from both UVA, or Ultraviolet A and UBV, or Ultraviolet B rays. UVA rays can penetrate deeper into the skin and cause significant damage if you are not using a product that is formulated to protect against them. Similarly, UVB rays are shorter wave rays and can quickly cause skin inflammation on the surface of the skin without the proper protection.
Use a Lotion, Not a Spray
In recent years, sunscreen sprays have become a popular option because they can be applied quickly without getting a thick cream all over your hands and swimwear. However, when applied outdoors, a sunscreen spray ends up mostly in the air and not so much on your skin. As a result, you are not nearly as well protected as you might think you are and will end up with a sunburn regardless of having sprayed the sunscreen. Although it may not be quite as convenient, a sunscreen lotion is the best way to make sure that you are adequately protecting all of your exposed skin.
